Squid pro quo

There’s no denying it: Skully and Red are friends with benefits. Benefits meaning not just sex, but cuddles, stupid date nights, and petty arguments. I’m still debating these two being an actual couple eventually. There are quite a few things keeping me from making them a couple though, namely their clashing personalities and Red’s constant nitpicking. Red already nitpicks every little thing about Skully’s appearance, primarily his clothing choices being cut off jeans and torn up “belly shirts”. Red can’t stand having Skully in his bakery because of his “deplorable” appearance. While Skully just laughs it off, it’s mainly because they are just friends. If they were in a relationship, Skully would expect Red to get used to his choice in clothing or get packing. It’s not just his clothing choice that Red nitpicks though. He will often pick at Skully’s thick accent, usually when Skully speaks in French with Cuttle and her mother. Red also picks at Skully’s hair, stretched ears, teeth, laugh, and basically everything about him. Sometimes it’s friendly joking but usually it will be Red being a nitpicky jerk.

Still, it’s not just Red that would be problematic. Skully isn’t one to be tied down with just one person. He likes freedom when it comes to things like sex. He likes the thought of being with someone for a long time, but in practice, he can get jittery and nervous being so close to someone. Skully is very picky when it comes to friends, which will often make him look snobbish. He only allows himself to get close to those who can protect themselves, in hopes that they will be able to hold their own if Reaper ever comes around and confronts them. For this main reason, Red is not at all an ideal friend or significant other for Skully. Still, it’s strange for him to even allow himself to have a friends with benefits relationship with someone who can’t defend themself. There is also the problem that Skully shows quite a bit of fondness toward Bounty Hunter (I have yet to mention this before seeing as it has just been developing in my head; even then, that relationship is a bit far-fetched).

Honestly, this is just me typing aimlessly for an hour and basically writing a small essay on the subject. So, I guess I’ll get to the main point: even though Red and Skully are friends with benefits, I still have yet to decide if they will ever formally “date” or consider each other significant others.
